1956 Giro di Lombardia

Giro di Lomabardia, 1956. Coppi attacked the sprinters with 500 meters to go, and nearly won. Andre Darrigade of the Bianchi team nipped him on the line. Coppi still finished ahead of such strong finishers as Magni, Poblet, Van Looy, Dbruyne, and Bobet. At 36 years of age, Coppi must have known this might be his last chance to win a major race. On the infield, Coppi cried bitter tears. He had been the one who brought Darrigade to the Bianchi team in 1955, only to be dropped from the team himself the following year. Coppi never again came so close to winning a Classic.
